Usually, you'll get a normal hat or a strange weapon which you'd receive less from trading than the key you used to open it in the first place.

Normal hats, on the other hand, can either be crafted from three refined metal or two other hats. Most hats you'd want on the market you could probably aquire with under two refined, though. It's helpful to look up the prices of certain items before you think about trading them.
