What do i feed darkling beetles
It is a darkling beetle , also called a mealworm beetle. These insects tend to hide so they can be found under, in, or between stacked hay bales. Darkling beetles do not contain cantharidin, the toxin in blister beetles ; they are not harmful.
Darkling beetles feed on decaying plant and animal matter. They also eat live plants, buds, fruit, fungi and grains. Darkling beetles rarely drink water because they are able to extract the moisture from the food they eat. Most species of darkling beetles are active during the night nocturnal.
Why are my mealworm beetles dying? When pupae die and turn black, it's usually because the worms weren't given enough moisture with carrots or potatoes at the end of the larval stage. They need to store the moisture to last through pupation and will dehydrate and die if they didn't get enough. They are also very heat sensitive. How long do mealworm beetles live? What are darkling beetles good for? Darkling beetles are scavengers and decomposers. They eat dead leaves, rotting wood and other decaying plant matter.
Mealworms are often found inside rotting stumps, logs and underneath rocks. They seek shaded and protected areas with a good supply of plant material to feed on. Do mealworm beetles need water? This is a no-mold zone. Feed like wheat bran is not terribly costly, and you should be able to buy some for less than one dollar per pound [link. To do so, spread it out on a cookie tray and bake it in the oven for twenty minutes at — degrees Fahrenheit. After the feed is clean, add three inches of it to the container.

Just be sure to feed them at least every few weeks to maintain a depth of around three inches. In a few months the complete lifespan from mealworm to Darkling beetle is five to six months you can start collecting mealworms to eat. Make sure to leave the pupae and beetles in the farm to reproduce.
You will not need to worry about removing the dead beetles, as the larvae will take care of that for you. The only cleaning you will need to do is remove any bits of moldy food. Place a vegetable such as a carrot into the container and leave it for five minutes. You will find that the mealworms will have latched onto the carrot. Now you may pull the vegetable out and shake it over a separate container to collect your meal…worms.
If you are fortunate enough to have more mealworms than you know what to do with, you can store extras in a freezer in plastic bags.
